In San Carlos, near Coronado, word is spreading about a brazen crime. A Panamanian couple was abducted in the parking lot of the now very famous "Carlito’s Restaurant" on the Pan-American Highway in the mid-day sun, then taken to Panama City to an ATM machine where $500 was withdrawn and stolen, then they were robbed of all valuables and drumped off at the MultiCentro shopping mall. From their tormentors’ manner of speech, the victims believe that the robber/kidnappers were Venezuelan.
Crime is and has been a reality in the beach communities that attract a lot of upscale retirees, but we haven’t seen many express kidnappings like this in the area until now. However, last year when DIJ agents opened fire on a family on their way out to an outing at The Decameron, not far from Coronado, and killed two children, the plea from the gunman and gunwoman was that they thought that they were shooting at kidnappers from La Chorrera. The shoot first and verify later approach is widely condemned, but the notion that there are kidnappers on the loose in the area is not entirely far-fetched.
