Credit card usage- Boquete and Panama City

My wife and I plan on traveling in Panama City and Boquete in July and I am wondering what the acceptance is of credit cards in these areas. Is American Express accepted in most places or should I be bringing cash instead? Any issues with travelers checks that you are aware of? Assuming that Panama City will accept all but not so sure of the Boquete area.
