Taboga Swimmers Restricted

The Panama Maritime Authority (AMP) reported that the duration of the cleanup after the oil spill in Taboga Island, the area will remain restricted to swimmers.

The director of Ports and Maritime Industries of the AMP, Gerardo Varela said he still has not found the cause but has already begun research to determine the source of the oily product.

"It will be a little difficult to know where the product came from because of vessels that clean their fuel tanks that pass through our waters daily," said Varela in a local newscast .

He added that it could be related to "fuel delivery at night."

According to Varela, the AMP does "sweeping and collecting" daily on the Bay of Panama on the Pacific side and Colon area.

Similarly, AMP staff monitors in all minor ports daily, and schedules to see if there is a spill every four hours.

Contingency plan..........................

According to the official, AMP maintains a contingency plan that no vessel has delivered a product but for company personnel.

"We have developed a National Contingency Plan for Oil Spills, involving other entities such as My Environment and the National Civil Protection System, which is already in the National Assembly for discussion because" he added.

This initiative seeks to have the resources and equipment to deal with any eventuality related to an oil spill.
