Basic Smart Phone for WhatsApp via WiFi?

After leaving the grind of corporate America I told myself that I never wanted to use a smart phone again. However, with the wide use of WhatsApp I need to use one.

What's a good, basic, brand name smart phone that won't be obsolete in six to twelve months?

I know I can purchase a Samsung galaxy S7 for upwards of $1,000 but I don't want to spend that kind of money.

Keep in mind I'll only be using it via WiFi at home without a data plan.

Any caveats?

Thanks in advance.
