I have been in Panama for 17 months and do not have a wide base of Panamanian contacts yet, so am looking for opinions of those with more experience here.
If the worst case of Trump's threat to use military force to "take back" the canal were to happen, what is the likely reaction of Panamanians in general, or the government to such an act?
By worst case I am referring to an invasion of Panama by the insertion of armed forces into the country with takeover of the canal, and the ongoing security measure that would be enforced to control access to the canal zone.
Would Panamanians take out their anger on US expats and make life here more dangerous or less secure?
Would the government revoke visas of US citizens in retaliation, or even worse do what the US did to Japanese Americans in WWII?
Stuff like this seems like grist for apocalyptic themed action movies, but certainly there is some scale of negative reaction to Americans that would occur if something this terrible would happen.
If it were just Trump blathering on with his constant agitation and lies, I would be more sanguine about ignoring it, and treat it like the promise to build the wall or end the war in Ukraine in 1 day. But my concern level has risen as I see more and more propaganda supporting the notion that Panama has violated the Torrijos-Carter treaty, and the US is within its rights to insert the military to take back what the propagandists say is rightfully the property of the US, irrespective of what the treaty actually says (which I have read).
