Tourist Identification ???

Are tourists from the US required to carry their actual Passport with them at all times when visiting Panama? I have seen it stated that a certified copy is acceptable as long as it includes the entry stamp and ID page. However, getting it certified is a process that invoves a visit to the US Embassy. Will an uncertified copy suffice? I am quite sure that every tourist from the US does not go to the US embassy, or carry their actual passport with them to the beach in Panama!
