Border Hopping

Hi folks, I read about border hopping and it sounds too good to be true.
As I understand it, you cross to Costa Rica (for example), spend a night or two, and then return to Panama and can stay another 180 days legally.

Can it really be so simple? And is it legal? I think some countries will kick you out for this sort of thing, so just wanted to check.

Thanks for any info!
