How long can you stay as Tourist?

How long per year can you stay in Peru as a tourist? Do you automatically get a 90 day stamp or can you request a 180? Is Peru a country you can do a border run and stay longer? I would like to spend 3 or 4 months traveling around to different parts of the country, and once I find a place I really like stay for a number of months. Would it be possible to spend a full year or close to it without a visa?
