D7 Visa Criminal Record

We are in the process of applying for a D7 visa for Portugal. My husband, unfortunately, has a shoplifting charge from over 20 years ago. Will that cause our application to be denied? Does anyone have any experience with this or know of anyone who was successful with their application with similar charges?
