Moving to Spain

I'm from the UK and thinking about moving to Spain (Tenerife) but not sure where to begin. I have been to many web sites but the information they give is not always the same.

I would first like to know what documents I will need when appling for a residence permit. Can I apply here in the UK or do I have to go to Spain. Have been to the Ministry of the Interior website but could not find the
form to download.

Also one web site I went to says you can't live in Spain without being in employment their, but others say you don't have to work as long as you have the funds to support yourself. Could you please tell me which is true?
