Where to start in Madrid?

Hi I am 31 and moved to Madrid 6 weeks ago to work at the new Hilton. making the transition with work has been easy as I have worked with hilton for 5 years, however finding life outside of the hotel is proving to be harder. I am hoping to find my own flat next week, so then I really will be on my own. My Spanish is basic at the moment, but will be having lessons one on one from next week. I am looking for some advice on how to start building my new life in madrid. Thank you Rachel
