Anyone living in Gandia or thereabouts?

I am thinking of going to Spain, Gandia. In order to become a resident I understand that you need the NIE, what about the empadronizamiento? Do you have to do that?

In order to do anything from renting to buying a car or looking for a job, do you need to be a resident?

Can anyone give me the procedure? What happens if you decide to move cities after you have registered in one?
