International Driving Permit IDP

We have rented cars several times in Spain with only our US licenses and were never required to have and international driving permit(IDP). I have been told if you were to be stopped by the police you must have an IDP if driving with a foreign license, and that Spain one of the few countries in Europe does not recognize an international driver's license(IDL), which apparently is different from an IDP. Can anyone confirm this or has had the experience of being asked if stopped by an official to show your international driving permit. We will be living in Spain for five months so therefore will be renting a car from time to time.
