Rent with Agency or Private Owner?

Hello! I am moving to Amsterdam early next year with my company (my husband is joining me as well). It is my responsibility to find an apartment to rent. I've looked at about 5-10 apartments with a local agency, price range is between 1750 - 2200 EUROS (2 bedroom, 1 1/2 Bath). These apartments were in the South, West, and Center of Amsterdam. Is this the standard price for leasing an apartment in Amsterdam? According to the agent, I won't qualify for apartments under 1300 EUROS as I am not a resident and due to the point system in Holland. Does this sound about right? What are the pros and cons of leasing an apartment with an agent as opposed to going with a private owner? I did a quick Google search and private owners seem to advertise cheaper prices but my concern is legitimacy? Any suggestions on how an expat should lease? Recommended areas to live in Amsterdam? Recommended agencies? Ideally I would like to get the rent down than what has been proposed but not sure if this is realistic. All information on the leasing process in Holland is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!
