I dont know if this applies to citizens from the US(Which i assume you are), but the laws for UK citizens have recently changed so that any applications for work visas must now first be approved by the government in Turkey. Unfortunately this means the laws are now very similair to the ones in the UK and US where a job must be advertised locally and be proven to be unfillable without foreign staff. Hope this isnt to much of a downer for you, it certainely was for me, I had a job lined up to move into, but applied for my visa just two weeks to late to miss the new laws :(

Thank you for that piece of information. I am a UK citizen I would be very interested to know what job you had lined up as when I checked what jobs we could enter into the list seemed to exclude UK citizens from doing virtually anything. Maybe under the new laws we could actually have more choice of jobs provided Turkish Citizens dont want them. It is our intentions to buy a small pension to provide our main source of income but my daughter and her boyfriend would certainly need to work.

Hi my wife and I are thinking of purchasing a property in Turkey and are wondering how easy would it be to become residents and will we be able to work. As we live in the UK at the moment we are covered by the National Health Service for all our medical care does Turkey have a similar system in place. Thanks Trevor age 44 yrs Carol age 49 yrs

I visited Turkey this summer and fell in love with the place. I am planning another trip later this year.
I would love to move over next spring to work. Ideally I would like a rental property for the summer with a view to permanent residence. Any advise on employment in Turkey would be much appreciated, I currently work in the banking sector but I am more than willing to try something new. My preference would be to work on the turquoise coast and was thinking of Fethiye, however I am flexible about this.
I would also like some advise about Real Estate in Turkey, as I see this as a good investment opportunity. I am currently twentyfive and as a first time buyer in England I am finding this next to impossible. My thoughts were to buy a property on the coast line, for summer rentals and possibly winter ones too.
I would much appreciate any advice as I am finding it difficult to obtain all the information I need. Any other useful links would also be welcome.
Thanks

Hello "Treebo", I have recently gone through the residency process and can give you some info. My residency was based on being married to a Turkish citizen, although I do own property here also; I believe owning property is enough of a reason to get residency. The process is easy but takes a couple months; it involves going through the local police officials and the regional security department. I do know that you cannot have a residency and a work permit at the same time. You can have one or the other. For me to work, I would have to cancel my residency and my employer would apply for my work permit. As for NHS-type medical service, there is a gov't system here but it is underfunded and antiquated. It would not be a good option for someone used to NHS service. Every expat here I know uses private insurance from the home country or just pays cash outright. Prices are very reasonable for normal services, many private hospitals and clinics have U.S. or European trained staff. Also check www.marmarisinfo.com and see the Brit Embassy link for some good info. -Ted in Izmir
