Shipping vs. bringing on airplane

We would like to ship some belongings to Uganda but have been warned that getting them through customs can be difficult at best. What have been the experiences of others. Did you opt to bring extra suitcases at $200 each instead of shipping? How long does shipment typically take and how much additional does it take to get things out of customs?
