Hi guys, I have not looked in here in some time, and my wife saw a story about Kherson on "Comcast/Xfinity. We have the Russian pkg. What is the "real news" re living and costs lately in March. We know the gas prices are around $80 for heating, I pay $110 near Chicago. What else is going on? I haven't traveled anywhere for a long time.

Michael-- I own a rather large home in Kherson--I am quite familiar with the city. The price you stated for natural heating gas is determined on so many factors. How big is the house, How well is it insulated, how warm do you like to keep it. I like mine nice and warm-- it is about 2500 sq. ft-- In the cold season My gas bill is around 175. dollars per month. Probably 4-5 months like this. The rest of the year is only gas for cooking, which is nearly nothing! I live near the Tsyuripinsk bridge-If one has about 600. dollars per month, you can survive well. Beautiful city, lots of greenery. Now is the time to buy property-- Have a place to live, with about 600 dollars extra, you can live well. There is an airport in Kherson, but you must fly through Turkey, or Kiev to get there. The airport is registered as KHE. People are wonderful there--jobs are very hard to find, Much better if you are retired, and collecting a pension. Hope this helps some. Dont wait till it is too late-- Kherson Bill

Hello: i was saying that after one has a place to live (house), apartment, etc--that about 600 dollars monthly one can live ok. Seriously, one can survive here much cheaper than that! Most from first world countries like to live better, so I say around 600 month, and a place to live will do. Ukraine is in an economic downturn now, and with a little looking, and bargaining , one can find house, or apartment pretty cheap! I bought an unfinished home, and re-modeled it . Can use labor here, as it is not expensive! Very few jobs are available here, so dont expect to find one. Ukraine is a good place for someone on retirement pension, or a regular income like Social/security. Hope this helps. Kherson Bill.

Just a follow up to Bill's message. I also built two houses in Odesa and after a lot of research about the cost of utility's it was evident what to put in. We put pipes under the floors and the heating elements under the windows that connect to the floor pipes in the entire house. Then a key ingredient to keep the expensive down as being able to turn on/off the valves that control each room. Also, we put a rather large fireplace which is normal in Ukraine and of course we used the firebrick but plus the Flagstone that gets hot and stays hot throughout the night. And then more ! Electric heaters in the bathrooms which are really nice ! So monthly in the cold months gas and electric equal +/- a little about 3000 uah or about 100 bucks ! You have been writing about going/moving to Ukraine for a few years now, I hope you make it. The cost for things in Odesa are more but you can live decent for about 1000$ and that includes rent. My advice for somebody who moves there for the first time is move downtown where you dont really need a car..For 1500$ month you can live good. Not like a king but good. So about 50 percent less than the usa..

Sure, quality of life is a good way to approach your decision. I have spent a lot of time in Kiev and Odessa and my opinion would be Odessa. Why is because of the ocean..Kiev has a big river and a few small beaches on the river but still, it isnt an ocean. From May 1 until about October 15 Odesa beaches and restaurants are busy. Not factoring in Covid here. And factoring in that you will stay in the center of both citys. There really insnt anything that stands out in Kiev but there is just more of the same. Pretty much all cities in Ukraine are the same some just have more of it. As far as cost goes you can expect about the same. I dont know your budget but if you have about $2000 per month you can have a decent life in the center of either big city. It takes a special kind of person to live in Ukraine but it can be done..I wont go into the negative things here I will just remind you that you are going to a 3rd world country and the people are desperate and they want your money ! My advice, make friends quickly but careful who you choose !

I chose to tell you $2000 a month because prices have gone up drastically and continue to rise.. There are cheaper places like Bill says but if your downtown in a 600 sq ft house expect to pay 700-1000 per month. That is a decent place with wifi and all expenses for the house included. The other 1000 is for fun. I spend a lot more than that but I travel a lot..SO good luck !!

I have lived in both Odessa and Kiev. I always preferred Odessa. Kiev is a dirty city in general. Odessa is definitely better for the beaches. And a little cheaper.
