Single Women in UAE

Can someone please explain the rules and regulations regarding unmarried couples co-habitating in Dubai. I am currently considering joining my long-term partner in the UAE and have received mixed responses regarding this issue.

For example, have there ever been any recorded cases of Europeans being imprisoned for living together, whilst not married? In the same vein, does it make a difference if you are engaged.

I would really prefer not to get married just for the sake of it, but can someone please let me know whether this is a real or imagined risk.
