Extending Tourist Visa for more than 90 Days

My retired wife and I will be visiting Malta winter and would like to stay for 6 months.

My sister-in-law's parents have been going to Portugal (from Canada) for about 20 years, every year, and extend their stays to 4 - 6 months each trip by going to the government office in the nearby city of Portomao during their stay and paying for an extension.

Should we expect the same type of formality in Malta when we get there?
