Shipping household items from US

We are a retired couple who is in the process of applying for our D7 visa. We plan to rent first and then consider buying. We have personal and household items that we would like to ship over if we buy a place of our own. I’m concerned about the duty and customs that may be charged. I did read that if you have a resident visa those charges are waived for used goods. Can someone please explain your experience and hopefully confirm this? Thanks
