What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Central?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Central about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to understand that Hong Kong has a high standard of healthcare, so you can expect good prenatal and postnatal care. However, it can be expensive, especially in private hospitals, so ensure you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity costs. Secondly, decide early on whether you want to give birth in a public or private hospital as the experience can be quite different. Public hospitals are cheaper but may not offer the same level of comfort and privacy as private hospitals. Thirdly, book your hospital as soon as you know you're pregnant. Hong Kong is densely populated and hospital beds can fill up quickly, especially in popular private hospitals. Fourthly, consider hiring a doula or midwife for additional support during pregnancy and childbirth. They can provide emotional support, help with pain management during labor, and assist with breastfeeding after the baby is born. Fifthly, if you're not fluent in Cantonese, look for a hospital with English-speaking staff. Communication is crucial during this time, and you want to ensure you fully understand everything that's happening. Sixthly, familiarize yourself with the local customs and practices around childbirth. In Hong Kong, it's common for new mothers to follow a month-long confinement period after giving birth, during which they rest and eat specific foods to recover their strength. Lastly, take advantage of the many support groups and resources available for new parents in Hong Kong. These can be a great way to meet other expats going through the same experiences and to learn more about raising a child in Hong Kong," said a member in Central, Hong Kong.
