What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Faro?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Faro about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Portuguese healthcare system. Portugal has a high standard of healthcare, and maternity services are generally very good. However, you may want to consider private healthcare for more personalized care. Ensure you have the necessary health insurance coverage. If you're working in Portugal, you'll be entitled to healthcare through the social security system. If not, you'll need to arrange private health insurance. Find a good obstetrician and hospital. Ask for recommendations from other expats or locals, or search online. Make sure the hospital is convenient for you and that the staff speaks a language you're comfortable with. Register your pregnancy as soon as possible. In Portugal, you need to register your pregnancy at your local health center to receive prenatal care. You'll be given a 'Mother's Booklet' which records all your medical information throughout your pregnancy. Attend all your prenatal appointments. Regular check-ups are important to monitor the health of you and your baby. You'll also have several ultrasound scans throughout your pregnancy. Prepare for the birth. Attend antenatal classes if they're available. Pack a hospital bag with everything you'll need for your stay in the hospital. Understand the maternity leave laws in Portugal. If you're working, you're entitled to maternity leave. Make sure you know your rights and what you're entitled to. Register the birth. After your baby is born, you'll need to register the birth at the local civil registry office. You'll need to do this within 20 days of the birth. Finally, enjoy this special time. Having a baby in a foreign country can be challenging, but it's also a unique and rewarding experience," said another expat in Faro, Portugal.
