What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Sapa?

Answer this Question

We asked people in Sapa if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!...

"In Sapa, it's important to respect local customs and traditions. Avoid wearing revealing clothing, especially when visiting religious or sacred sites, as it is considered disrespectful. Do not touch anyone's head or point with your feet, as these are considered rude gestures in Vietnamese culture. When visiting local homes or establishments, always ask for permission before taking photos. It's considered impolite to take pictures without consent. Avoid public displays of affection, as they are not common in Vietnamese culture and can make locals feel uncomfortable. Do not give money or gifts to local children, as it can encourage a culture of begging. Instead, consider donating to local charities or community projects. Avoid making loud noises or causing disturbances, as Vietnamese people value peace and quiet. Do not litter or damage the environment. Sapa is known for its stunning natural beauty, and it's important to keep it clean and preserved for future generations. Avoid discussing sensitive topics such as politics, the Vietnam War, or criticism of the Vietnamese government. These topics can be seen as disrespectful and can lead to uncomfortable situations. Always negotiate prices before purchasing goods or services, as it's common for prices to be inflated for tourists. However, do so respectfully and avoid aggressive haggling. Finally, always show respect and gratitude towards the local people. A simple smile or thank you can go a long way in building positive relationships with the locals," said a member in Sapa, Vietnam.
