What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Amalfi?

Answer this Question

We asked people in Amalfi if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!...

"When visiting Amalfi, it's important to respect the local customs and traditions to avoid any cultural faux pas. Here are some tips: Avoid wearing revealing clothing, especially when visiting religious sites like churches. Italians generally dress more conservatively and showing too much skin can be seen as disrespectful. Don't expect everything to be open all day. Many businesses in Italy close for a few hours in the afternoon for a break known as "riposo". Don't rush your meals. Italians take their time to enjoy their food, and rushing or asking for the bill too soon can be seen as rude. Avoid asking for changes to the menu. Italian cuisine is deeply rooted in tradition, and asking for substitutions or changes can be seen as an insult to the chef. Don't tip too much. In Italy, service is often included in the bill, so tipping is not necessary. If you do want to leave a tip, a few euros is usually sufficient. Avoid speaking loudly in public. Italians value their peace and quiet, especially in smaller towns like Amalfi. Don't expect to see a lot of vegetarian or vegan options. Italian cuisine is heavily based on meat and cheese, so if you have dietary restrictions, it's a good idea to research restaurants in advance. Avoid being too informal. Italians tend to be more formal in their interactions, so it's best to use formal titles and greetings until invited to do otherwise. Don't forget to say "Buongiorno" (Good day) or "Buonasera" (Good evening) when entering shops or restaurants. It's a small gesture that shows respect and is appreciated by the locals," mentioned another expat when asked about moving to Amalfi, Italy.
