What do expats find most challenging?
We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in Chiang Rai. They wrote...
"Expats in Chiang Rai, may find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture, as not everyone speaks English, and Thai can be difficult to learn. Additionally, they may struggle with the concept of "saving face," which is deeply ingrained in Thai culture and can lead to indirect communication and avoidance of confrontation. The heat and humidity can also be challenging for those not accustomed to tropical climates. Furthermore, expats may find it difficult to adjust to the slower pace of life, as well as the different customs and traditions, such as removing shoes before entering homes and temples, and showing respect to elders and monks. Finally, navigating the local bureaucracy and legal system can be a challenge, particularly when dealing with visas, work permits, and other official matters," remarked another expat in Chiang Rai, Thailand.
