What do expats find most challenging?
We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in Khor Fakkan. They wrote...
"Expats in Khor Fakkan often find the language barrier to be a significant challenge, as Arabic is the official language and not everyone may speak English fluently. The strict adherence to Islamic customs and traditions can also be difficult for some expats to adjust to, particularly those from Western countries. This includes the conservative dress code, the prohibition of alcohol in certain areas, and the observance of prayer times throughout the day. The extreme heat during the summer months can also be a challenge for those not accustomed to such climates. Additionally, the societal norms, such as the segregation of genders in certain public spaces and events, can be a culture shock for some expats. Lastly, the bureaucratic processes for things like obtaining a driver's license or setting up utilities can be complex and time-consuming, which can be frustrating for newcomers," commented one expat who made the move to Khor Fakkan, the UAE.
