Traveling indefinitely

I am an American looking to travel to Chile and other parts of South America. I have looked into some Spanish Language schools in Santiago, but they seemed a bit sketchy. Does anyone have any info on those classes, and how safe in general is Chile to travel in for an extended amount of time? Thanks
