Cellular Carriers

I did a search on this and got nothing. Is there a most popular cell carrier in Chile, like Verizon is in the US (with the most towers, and arguably the "best" service)? And is it possible to keep a US phone and tablet just by changing the SIM card? Both devices are in good shape, I don't need new ones unless it is required for compatibility. I appreciate any information or experiences you can share. It would be nice to know whether or not to bring my devices, or to sell them here and buy new ones when I get there.
