Can someone please help a gringo understand?

I have been here in Chile for about 8 months now. Everything was cool until about 3 weeks ago. All of a sudden, things went crazy. Last week I watched a demonstration that felt like the people were rebelling against what they felt was an occupying force, even though they elected it. What's with that? Can someone please help a gringo to understand what is going on? Thanks.
