Marriage visa residency rules

Can someone point me to the actual written rules for a Marriage visa? I was going to do a visa via my child; because you could be out of country for up two years; two immigration attorneys advised that it would be better with the marriage visa as I did not want to supply too much information about my finances. (They were correct).

Those two attorneys indicated that I could be out of the country for 180 days and my visa would remain valid. However, Vice Counsel at the Houston Consulate herself; stated it as must remain in the country for 180 days. I challenged it and she was very clear. (Clearly wrong in my opinion).

So my question is can anyone point me to the written regulations?

Regards,

lp
