Our “home help” (maid?) has worked for us part-time for more than 15 years and is more of a valued part of our family more than anything else. Thus, we are always concerned about her state of health, all the more so as her perennial headaches were identified as a confirmed aneurysm (in the brain) two years ago. Initially, her EPS (with Suma) told her they would defer from surgery for the time being and see how it developed with regular 3 monthly controls. Now, she, and we, are worried as she is suffering from recurrent, strong headaches and we advised her to check with her EPS to see if it required treatment – Their answer gives us a confirmation on how low the Colombian basic EPS service has fallen over these last couple of years.
Gloria, her name, asked her doctor one question, and then a second: neither of them giving her any real confirmation or assistance – only to be told she could only ask two questions – no more, and; as these had been answered according to them, she was shown “the door”.
I do feel this example clearly defines the differing treatments that can be provided by the Colombian Health, Medical services – (1), a very satisfactory service if you can afford the Prepagado Service (or equivalent), and (2) the dismal attention you are likely to get if you can only get access to the basic EPS – such attention also including a demeaning attitude to their “lower class”. I will now provide the means for Gloria to see an independent specialist, something most patients are unable to secure.
Colombia has much to offer most visitors and expats – this isn´t one of them
