What's it like to live in CR?

I'd love to hear about people's experiences living in Costa Rica... the San Jose area especially. In particular, I'm interested in knowing what it's like to raise kids and buy real estate in the area. What are the schools like? Crime? Cultural events? What neighborhoods in and around San Jose would you recommend for a young family?
