Visa issues

At the end of March, I'll be moving to Hamburg to live with my fiance. I'm still very confused about the three-month stay allowance. I understand that I must register for a residence permit once I arrive; but what happens when the 3 months have expired? Will someone come after me and tell me to leave? Is it not enough to prove that I have a place to live and an employed partner to support me? Information on the German consulate in NY website is not very helpful. It seems all I need to do is show up in Germany and let officials know that I'm there. What if I DON'T let anyone know I'm there?

I do plan to find a job (as queried in another post), but am wondering about what difficulties we'll face if this doesn't happen within the allotted time.

Our plans to marry are not immediate. But I'm beginning to think that things would be easier if we simply did it here in the U.S. before I move to Germany. (Though I'd rather not scare my boyfriend with accelerated nuptials--we're both very laid back about marriage status).

Any and all information is received with tremendous gratitude.

Michelle
