informal vs. formal speech

Hi!
This may seem like a strange question. I teach English here in Germany and am trying to explain to a student how to differentiate between the speech you use when speaking with your boss and a friend. In German there is a nice construction used for people you don't know on a personal leve, but in English we don't have this. Besides avoiding slang, what are the other ways we change our speech when speaking with a supervisor or complete stranger in a business setting?
