Dogs in Germany?

We might be relocating to the Frankurt area. We have a rather large black Labrador dog and after reading some stories of hysteria over dogs in 2000 we wonder how our dog will be accepted by people in general. As he is rather heavy set, people here in Belgium sometimes give him a wide berth to avoid passing him. He is a big softy and likes to play with other dogs and is burglar friendly. Has anyone with a dog met any such prejudices? Also, is it difficult to rent a property with a dog and two cats?
