german residency

im an australian who wishes to live in germany for a year or so.I have recently travelled to europe, and wish to spend some time in germany.I now have a german girlfriend(no we are not marrying yet!) and wish to stay here,get my own place and work to support my self for about a year.
I cannot apply for a WHV as i have left aus.
Is there any way of getting sponsered by a company or the like in order to gain a residency permit....any tips.
please help as im going in circles and its sending me insane.
