Defacto type visa

search as I might I never found this topic in the forum...
I heard from a friend of a friend that you can appy for a visa based on having a german partner but not spouse.
I had a visa lawver look into it (he didn't understand why we wouldn't just get married...) who came back with 'It's fine, they'll just have a surprise visit to confirm that you are partners.'
Which all sounds good, been living together for years etc
But I was wondering if anyone had any first (or 2nd) hand experience with this.
Sounds easy, but having just had them procrastinate for 5 months on a simple minjob visa, I'm wondering how long it all takes.
Any advice much appreciated.
Oh it goes by the name of something like nichteheliche Lebensgemainschaft im Ausläanderrech (if your german is better than mine!)
Cheers
PS: Not the marriage of convenience type.
