Mountain towns

I've lived in Honduras for two years and visited Antigua, so I'm familiar with Latin America. I love the mountains and smaller towns. I know the absolute best altitudes for year round living are between 4000 and 5500 feet. Towns smaller than 50,000 are generally easier to get around in and safer. I'm looking for those places around Antigua, Atitlan and Coban. Are there any recommendations from people here as far as a favorite? I love the markets and living in small neighborhoods. thanks.
