Driving to Guatemala from US along the east coast of Mexico, Taking a vehicle to Gua. permanently vs buying 1 there.

1. Safe driving routes, border crossings suggestions?
Found a few great descriptions but dating back more than 10 years - wish to find some commentary more current.
2. How expensive is it to transfer vehicle registration from US to Guatemala vs. just purchasing one there?
3. What are insurance requirements and costs there?
4. Recommend vehicle insurance company?
5. If purchasing a used vehicle there (older Toyota FJ) - recommend a dealer or agent?
6. Small home here and limited furnishings to take/ship from Virginia, US to Guatemala. Suggestions?
