How long can you stay

My hubby has several job opportunitys in India. We are from the U.S. Some one said today that he could only get a 1yr contract with a possibility of another 2 yr contract. But then that would be it. Can you only stay in the country for 3yrs? We would be moving as a family of 7 selling most everything before we left. If we could only stay a limited time I would probably put some of our stuff in storage. Oh well. Any help would be appreciated. Oh ya my hubby is a pilot if that makes any difference.
