International schools vs regualr schools

I grew up and was educated in India right through my undergrad. however, having been out of the country I am a little confused about the new crop of schools that seem to be popping up at exhorbitant prices. We are planning to move to bangalore within a year or so and will be looking for schools for my 2 kids. My questions are:
What is the difference between an "international" school and the run of the mill ICSE/CBSE school?
What are the top schools in each of these categories and why?
Any detailed response or website for additional information is greatly aprreciated.
