Italian Driver License

After living and driving in Rome for more than a year, I was stopped by the Carabinieri who had a problem with my US and International driver licenses. Apparently, I must get an Italian license after 1 year of living here. The Carabinieri wanted to impound my car, but let me go after a lengthy discussion. Does anyone have any experience of getting an Italian driver license? I heard that one can exchange a US license for an Italian one? Can the US Embassy assist in this matter? Thanks, IY.
