Italy - dream or a nightmare?

Hi, this is a question to all those who moved to Italy because they felt they wanted to be expats and just had to live in Italy. I am in the very early stages of planning my move, and of course I have a million doubts. So people who did it, is it everything you ever dreamed of? Is it better/ worse? Would you have done something differently? Do you wish you have not moved or is this a dream come true?
I am particularly concerned about making friends. I am a foreigner in America and I found creating new friendships here very difficult. How is it in Italy?
