staying 6 months with no visa

I'm hoping to stay in Italy for 6 months--study the language, travel around other parts of EU (Schengen countriies). I have a place to stay the entire time (a friend is letting an apartment) and a car. But i'm concerned about traveling outside italy once the first 90 days are up. Anyone have any thoughts??
