When do you decide enough is enough?

Sharan and I were both writing in about how our families are in split between 2 countries due to various family, health, or work issues. Some family members in US and some in Italia. When do you say the separation isn't worth the job? Isn't worth the pay? Isn't worth the time away from your kids? Or the fights over the phone? Or just trying finding a time to talk when you are both awake, not at work, with a 7 hour time difference? What are indicators that the strain has gone over the line? Looking for help from those who've been doing this expat thing awhile.........
