Complicated purchase

We have been in process to buy an apartment in Italy. We completed the compromesso and the rogito was to be finalized on Oct. 30, 2011, which we were prepared to do. Unfortunately one of the owners died in June. There is agreement to sell the apartment to us, but the attorneys have said that they need to complete an "inventario previsto per legge" Any idea how long this could take? Months? Years? Any way to speed it up? Thank you.Susan
