Touring Italy

I'm currently preparing to go to Italy to study art for a college class. I'll be in Rome, Venice and Florence each for a week, and I'm looking for suggestions about where I can go and what I can see besides the typical tourist attractions. I want to see what Italy is truly like, to the best of my abilities in the time I will be there. I will appreciate any ideas anyone has about places, activities, or even people to talk to. Thanks!!
