Health: Annual Check-Ups

It is usual for those with medical insurance in the US to have an annual physical. Is this a common practice when using the Italian medical system? When enrolled in the Italian program, does one start by establish a relationship with a general practitioner? I have dual citizenship and will be depending on the Italian system when I move there next year. Any basic information on the Italian health care system that may be different from how I do things now would be very much appreciated.
