Shipping a Container with Household Goods

We are considering to ship a 20-ft container with our household goods from a non-EU country to Italy (Genoa).
Will the Italian customs charge us tax, duty and maybe even VAT (besides their normal clearing fees) for our stuff?
Anybody with that experience out there?
