Heath insurance

My partner and I are retired UK pensioners thinking of applying for residenza in Italy. We need health insurance but are horrified at the prices quoted by online international companies. Has anyone any clear, concise advice re a suitable provider; Italian would do fine. Also, does this private cover need to continue after we have the tessera sanitaria? Many thanks. Jenny
